Our Legacy

Honouring a Pioneer of Indian Education

David Hare (1775–1842) was a Scottish watchmaker who chose India as his home and devoted his entire life to the cause of education in Bengal. He helped found Hindu College (now Presidency University), Hare School, the School Book Society, and was instrumental in establishing Calcutta Medical College.

The David Hare Foundation (DHF), Kolkata, established in honour of this extraordinary philanthropist, works to preserve his legacy, support Hare School, and inspire every Harean — past, present, and future.
